A recent study conducted by scientists at The Ohio State University highlights the benefits of incorporating exercise breaks into lengthy and monotonous lectures. According to Scott Hayes, the author of the study published in the journal Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, and an associate professor of psychology, short exercise sessions during lectures can significantly improve students' attention and motivation.
Professor Hayes emphasized the challenge of maintaining focus during extended periods of lectures, stating that prolonged attention without breaks inevitably leads to fluctuating levels of concentration. He suggested that integrating brief physical activity breaks into classes could effectively re-engage students and enhance their productivity. Reflecting on his own experience, Hayes remarked, "If you give students a break and get their bodies moving for just a few minutes, it can help them get their minds back to the lecture and probably be more productive. I know it helps me, as well."
To test this hypothesis, Hayes implemented the strategy in four of his classes, dividing students into small groups and empowering them to design and lead the exercise sessions. This approach aimed to foster student ownership of the initiative and promote their active participation.
